Breast imaging we perform
- Screening mammography — cranio-caudal (CC) and medio-lateral oblique (MLO) views
- Diagnostic mammography for a lump, pain, skin change or nipple discharge
- Stereotactic biopsy of lesions seen only on the mammogram
- Sono-mammography — breast ultrasound, in the same visit
- Ultrasound-guided breast biopsy and FNAC
- Breast MRI on the 3T scanner — diagnosis, staging and BI-RADS

How to prepare
- If you still have periods, book in the week after your period ends — the breasts are least tender then.
- Do not use talcum powder, deodorant, perfume or cream on the chest or underarms on the day of the scan.
- Bring all previous mammograms, breast ultrasound reports and films — comparison is what makes a small change visible.
- Wear a two-piece outfit so that only the top needs to be removed.
- Tell the staff if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have breast implants.
- A female attendant is present for every mammogram.

Questions patients ask
Does a mammogram hurt?
The breast is pressed firmly between two plates for a few seconds at a time. Most women find it uncomfortable rather than painful, and it is over quickly. Booking in the week after your period makes it noticeably easier.
At what age should screening start?
Most guidelines suggest yearly screening from around 40, and earlier if a mother, sister or daughter has had breast cancer. Your own history matters more than any general rule — Dr. Mate will tell you what interval suits you after the first study.
Mammogram or ultrasound — which do I need?
Often both. Younger women frequently have dense breast tissue, where ultrasound sees things a mammogram can miss; a mammogram in turn shows tiny calcifications that ultrasound cannot. Both are available here in one visit, so nothing needs a second trip.
What is a stereotactic biopsy?
When the mammogram shows something the ultrasound cannot see, the machine itself guides a needle to that exact spot and takes a tissue sample. It is done with local anaesthetic, needs no operation and no admission.
